Frontiers of Medicine 2017, Volume 11, Issue 3,   Pages 378-385 doi: 10.1007/s11684-017-0541-8

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to characterize a meta-signature of differentially expressed mRNA in chronic kidney disease (CKD) to predict putative microRNA (miRNA) in CKD–mineral bone disorder (CKD–MBD) and confirm the changes in these genes and miRNA expression under uremic conditions by using a cell culture system. PubMed searches using MeSH terms and keywords related to CKD, uremia, and mRNA arrays were conducted. Through a computational analysis, a meta-signature that characterizes the significant intersection of differentially expressed mRNA and expected miRNAs associated with CKD–MBD was determined. Additionally, changes in gene and miRNA expressions under uremic conditions were confirmed with human Saos-2 osteoblast-like cells. A statistically significant mRNA meta-signature of upregulated and downregulated mRNA levels was identified. Furthermore, miRNA expression profiles were inferred, and computational analyses were performed with the imputed microRNA regulation based on weighted ranked expression and putative microRNA targets (IMRE) method to identify miRNAs associated with CKD occurrence. TLR4 and miR-146b levels were significantly associated with CKD–MBD. TLR4 levels were significantly downregulated, whereas pri-miR-146b and miR-146b were upregulated in the presence of uremic toxins in human Saos-2 osteoblast-like cells. Differentially expressed miRNAs associated with CKD-MBD were identified through a computational analysis, and changes in gene and miRNA expressions were confirmed with an in vitro cell culture system.

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 3,   Pages 313-319 doi: 10.1007/s11783-011-0346-y

Abstract: A continuous flow streamwise thermal gradient cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) counter with an aerosol focusing and a laser-charge-coupled device (CCD) camera detector system was developed here. The counting performance of the laser-CCD camera detector system was evaluated by comparing its measured number concentrations with those measured with a condensation particle counter (CPC) using polystyrene latex (PSL) and NaCl particles of varying sizes. The CCD camera parameters (e.g. brightness, gain, gamma, and exposure time) were optimized to detect moving particles in the sensing volume and to provide the best image to count them. The CCN counter worked well in the particle number concentration range of 0.6–8000 #·cm and the minimum detectable size was found to be 0.5 μm. The supersaturation in the CCN counter with varying temperature difference was determined by using size-selected sodium chloride particles based on K?hler equation. The developed CCN counter was applied to investigate CCN activity of atmospheric ultrafine particles at 0.5% supersaturation. Data showed that CCN activity increased with increasing particle size and that the higher CCN activation for ultrafine particles occurred in the afternoon, suggesting the significant existence of hygroscopic or soluble species in photochemically-produced ultrafine particles.

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 2,   Pages 318-332 doi: 10.1007/s11709-021-0715-y

Abstract: The aim of this study is to propose a new detection method for determining the damage locations in pile foundations based on deep learning using acoustic emission data. First, the damage location is simulated using a back propagation neural network deep learning model with an acoustic emission data set acquired from pile hit experiments. In particular, the damage location is identified using two parameters: the pile location ( ) and the distance from the pile cap ( ). This study investigates the influences of various acoustic emission parameters, numbers of sensors, sensor installation locations, and the time difference on the prediction accuracy of and . In addition, correlations between the damage location and acoustic emission parameters are investigated. Second, the damage step condition is determined using a classification model with an acoustic emission data set acquired from uniaxial compressive strength experiments. Finally, a new damage detection and evaluation method for pile foundations is proposed. This new method is capable of continuously detecting and evaluating the damage of pile foundations in service.

A novel method for PAPR reduction of the OFDM signal using nonlinear scaling and FM Regular Article

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2019, Volume 20, Issue 11,   Pages 1587-1594 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1800438

Abstract: (OFDM) has been adopted as standard beginning with the 4 generation mobile communication system because of its high-bit-rate transmission capability under frequency selective fading channel conditions. However, a major disadvantage of OFDM is the non-constant envelope signal with a high (PAPR). The high peak signal in OFDM is distorted through a nonlinear amplifier, which causes bit error ratio (BER) reduction. Many techniques have been developed for reducing PAPR at the cost of inefficient bandwidth usage or throughput because of the additional information about PAPR reduction. We propose a novel method, in which the high peak signal above the threshold of the nonlinear amplification region is nonlinearly downscaled to lower the PAPR. The time slot location and scaling ratio for where and how the high peak baseband OFDM signal is downscaled are transmitted using (FM) combined with OFDM, which requires less additional bandwidth than the previously proposed methods. Simulation results show that the proposed novel method provides a lower PAPR and elicits a better BER performance compared with other conventional methods, because it reduces the PAPR by and restores the pre-distorted signal using FM.
